Selecting the right subset of assets and weights from a universe of options is, at its core, always the same combinatorial optimization problem. It's NP-Hard: the number of possible portfolios grows exponentially with the size of the universe.
That problem shows up in investment management at three levels of increasing sophistication: tracking an index, beating it, and going fully market-neutral.
